Not against military
A number of writers to West Hawaii Today seem to think the others who wrote were against the military. That is not the case and is not true. We only felt these exercises could be done elsewhere — Bikini Island or others — rather than exposing the residents of the Big Island not only to the noise, but also to possible aerial accidents as has happened elsewhere.
We have aloha for all, but also want to protect our lifestyle even against those that are trying to protect ours.

Chief officer’s character critical
Beginning in 1998, I was a citizen observer for the tally machines at the county elections center. For four election cycles, including a statewide recount of every vote cast, I witnessed the work of the Hawaii County Office of Elections. I can say without reservation that former election Program Administrator Pat Nakamoto was exemplary, fair and a top-notch elections official. Not judging the details of the elections office terminations, it is unfortunate Ms. Nakamoto was relieved of her duties during an election cycle year.
Through my election observer duties, I saw Scott T. Nago make his way to become Office of Elections, Chief Election Officer. Irrespective of Ms. Nakamoto’s talents and termination, Mr. Nago’s character, elections acumen and consultation are critical for Hawaii County to ensure a fair ballot in 2012.
